Project location

The project is carried out in Tunisia on the island of Djerba. The choice of this island to house the project is not a coincidence: Djerba is located in the south of Tunisia, has a charm that comes from its wild nature, year-round mild climate, traditional architecture, and beautiful beaches. The island of Djerba rightly deserves its nickname, “Djerba the gentle,” for it offers beautiful fine white sand beaches, ever-present sunshine, and the warm and welcoming Mediterranean Sea. These attributes, along with more than a 100 hotels, resorts, a golf course, a casino, an international airport, and a marina, have made this region the number-one tourist destination in the country.

Djerba has a population of about 130,000. Its capital is Houmt Souk, known for its crafts, jewelers, and fishing port.

In the southwest of the island is Guellala, the village of potters, whose inhabitants engage in this traditional craft. Artisanal vases, gargoulettes, and pitchers are abundant in this region.

In the southern outskirts of Houmt Souk is Ghriba, a Jewish temple dating back to the sixth century B.C. and the second most sacred site of Judaism in the world. Ghriba is also a place of pilgrimage, and in the month of May, many Jews, especially from the Maghreb, gather here.

The island of Djerba has been renowned since antiquity. Djerba is a key destination in Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. Ulysses, who was only passing by, was so amazed by the beauty of its shores that he almost did not continue his voyage. The ancient Carthaginians founded several trading posts on the island. Around 587 B.C. ., after the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem, the island was host to Jewish refugees. The Romans built several cities there, and developed agriculture and commercial ports. Christians, Vandals, Byzantines and then Arabs : Djerba offers a historical mosaic that, since the 1960s has attracted many visitors and made the island a popular tourist destination.

Djerba boasts a typically Mediterranean climate. The average annual temperature is 19.8 °C; the monthly average is seldom above 30°C and rarely falls below 8°C. In the summer, the average maximum reaches 32.7 ° C but is offset by the sea breeze, while during the winter the monthly averages are above 12 ° C. Emmanuel Grevin spoke of the "fifth season” in Djerba
